Once crona, always innovative

Non-woven material at its best in an innovative formed design

Formed non-woven material is the very best way to bring creative ideas to life. This innovative material is easy to process, offering plenty of flexibility. Not to mention that it is of premium quality and extremely robust. Here at Brunner, we use it for our comfy crona felt seat shells.

Formed non-woven material has always been best known for its use within the automotive industry, where its practicality makes it a popular choice. The fact that it is durable and can be adapted with ease also earns the material extra points. For some time now, we have seen the material being deployed within the furniture industry too. Once you feel products made using formed non-woven material against your skin, its advantages become clear. The warm surface is sure to remind you of the pleasant texture of felt and yet this particular material just so happens to be much stronger, more durable and, most importantly, more versatile.

Its thermoplastic properties are the stuff designers’ dreams are made of. After all, the blend of polyester fibres can be permanently transformed into virtually any shape when heat and pressure are applied. This is possible thanks to the various fibres that make up the material having different melting points. The fibres bind together when compacted at high temperatures (the more bonding fibres there are, the softer and more flexible the finished product will be). It is even possible to introduce custom shades, mixes of colours and textures during the manufacturing process.

Formed non-woven material also absorbs sound and can be used regardless of temperature, making it ideal for interior design applications. It can be used for all sorts of products, including lampshades, storage boxes and acoustic elements. There are simply no limits when it comes to creativity – as the chairs in our popular crona felt series demonstrate beautifully. The material, which is in line with the ÖKO-TEX® Standard 100 and can be covered with other materials if required, is also environmentally friendly, tested for harmful substances and in compliance with the European fire protection standard EN 1021 1 and 2. In order to be certified as “fire-resistant”, the reaction to a lit cigarette and butane flame (simulated match) is assessed as part of two simulation tests. The object being tested must not be smouldering or burning after a specified amount of time has passed. We understand that safety comes first when it comes to furnishings in the home, at the office and in public spaces – even when working with the hottest designs around.
