High-Quality Furniture for Excellent Research

In the new Berlin Charité Medical Faculty research and teaching center, fina sled-base chairs provide relaxed working conditions.

We find Brunner furniture so convincing because of its high quality and discerning design.

The Berlin Charité ranks among the largest university hospitals in Europe. Located between main station, river Spree and Friedrichstrasse station, the historical “Campus Mitte” saw the inauguration of a new building housing the Charité pre-clinic and the research center for neurological and immunological sciences right in time for the winter semester 2012/2013. The pre-clinical training buildings of the medical faculties of Humboldt University and Freie Universität Berlin had before been dispersed all across the city – now they are combined under the same roof of the “CharitéCrossOver”.

This new building was designed by Berlin architect Stefan Ludes. Its sculptural, simple outer form creates an interesting contrast to the surrounding buildings dating back to the 19th century. The property line used to be regarded as the Charité rear side; the new building now opens up the plot towards the city. The four-storey clinker-clad main building houses a gross surface area of 23,000 square meters and consists of three wings positioned around an inner, glass-covered atrium. A set-back L-shaped two-storey complex is stacked on top. A primary goal, i.e. maximum flexibility in room usage, was realised by means of a modular skeleton structure.

The conference rooms, located on several floors, are equipped with delicate four-legged milanolight tables made by Brunner as well as with fina sled- base chairs. This stackable all-purpose chair with its shaped beech wood seat shell tapered towards the outside supports the flexible usage concept. Armrests and throughliner provide a high degree of seating comfort. The sled-base chairs’ design with its chromed solid steel frame emphasizes the modern and sculptural architecture of the building combining science, research and teaching. Even the staff kitchenettes feature fina sled-base chairs and milanolight four-legged tables.
