Sportive and Dynamic: Coloured Apple, Citrus and Petrol

In Europe’s most cutting-edge sports-oriented youth hostel, located in Duisburg, colourful Brunner furniture creates an inviting ambiance.

The Duisburg Sportpark youth hostel is Europe’s most cutting-edge sports-oriented youth hostel.

Rudolf Schwan, ex-chairman of the German Youth Hostel Rhineland regional association in Düsseldorf.

It looks more like a hotel than a youth hostel: the sports youth hostel located at Duisburg’s Sportpark Wedau athletic centre, opened in September 2013. With its spectacular flying roof on steel supports, clearly defining the piazza in front of the main entrance, this youth hostel sports a distinctive architecture, setting a clear counterpoint to MSV Duisburg’s soccer stadium right opposite. The V-shaped building, designed by Düsseldorf-based architectural firm Allnoch & Hütt, follows the acute-angled lot shape; the main entrance is positioned at the intersection of the two wings.

On the exterior, just like inside, the new building is entirely designed for sportiness and dynamics – with furniture to match. The furniture follows a sophisticated colour scheme reflecting the hues of the surrounding environment: sandy beige, lawn green, sunny yellow, sky and water blue. This was achieved by utilising a total of twelve Brunner series, convincing in their functionality, quality and modern design.

Outside and in the dining rooms, twin monobloc chairs, fox stacking chairs and hoc bar stools shine in Apple, Citrus and Petrol colours, contrasting with white and slate grey table tops. Two-coloured fina seat shell chairs round off the refreshing interior decoration concept. In the conference rooms and the youth hostel’s guest rooms, awarding authority and architect realised a more calming colour concept, deploying comfortable first class row linking chairs and prime stacking chairs, both in slate grey. Also deployed: practical basic folding tables and cosy due central column tables.
