New seating brings comfort and colour to retirement and nursing home

At Alters- und Pflegeheim Madle, the refurbishment promotes the well-being and social interaction of residents.

The large range of colours offers designers almost unlimited design freedom.

Hunziker Bürodesign GmbH, Reinach, Switzerland

Alters- und Pflegeheim Madle is situated in the centre of Pratteln, a suburb of Basel. After several conversions and new constructions in recent years, the home now has a bright, spacious and modern feel to it. 115 residents live on four floors, with secure living quarters for people with dementia on the attic floor.

In many respects, the previous furniture in the communal areas no longer met the current needs of residents and nursing staff in terms of comfort, handling and hygiene.

The visual role of the furniture should not be underestimated in social care institutions. This aspect was of central importance in the design of the Madle retirement home: it creates a feeling of homeliness, facilitates encounters and promotes social interaction.

The fact that this can be achieved with seating is impressively demonstrated in this case. The new colour scheme for the entire building was incorporated in the chairs and armchairs thanks to Brunner’s wide range of colours - specifically with the imitation leather covers. This was a decisive factor in the evaluation of the tenders submitted. The colour combinations allow you to move the seating to another area and switch them around at any time depending on requirements and activity it always matches!

Synthetic leather is pleasant to the touch and hard-wearing, hygienic, flame retardant and, above all, easy to clean. These properties have proven their value in the dementia care ward on the attic floor. Cats also live here, providing an unusual but all the more welcome distraction from everyday life at the home. It goes without saying that the seating needs to be durable and easy to clean.

Two Brunner models particularly suited to the care and living areas were selected by the home director and interior designer: the sturdy design of the buena nova conveys longevity and safety. The armrest with a pommel makes sitting and standing up easier, as does the higher seat. The backrest bar makes it easier for nursing staff to manoeuvre the residents to or from the table.

crona lounge are fully upholstered high-back chairs and sofas with integrated arm caps and a cosy wooden frame. When combined with the matching footstool they provide extra comfort and invite you to indulge in a cosy afternoon tea or a well-earned rest.

The feedback received from residents, relatives and guests has been particularly positive.
