Kloster Heidberg

Eupen, Germany, 2014

Modern and Functional in Historic Garb

Kloster Heidberg used to be a school, today it is a modern educational centre – thanks to functional Brunner furniture.

Equipped with modern Brunner furniture, historical cultural heritage, contemporary architecture and new uses merge perfectly in Heidberg Monastery.

Ralph Schröder, architect, Altiplan°architects, Liège

Kloster Heidberg in Eupen, Belgium, is more than 300 years old. Built by Franciscan nuns, it was last used as a school. In 2007, the German-speaking community in Belgium took over the listed building and decided to rebuild it, with the aim of putting it to good use as an educational centre plus accommodation. Rebuilding took place between 2012 and 2014. The architectural firm of Altiplan°architects, Liège, had to master the particular challenge of combining the stipulations of monument conservation with the requirements of a modern event facility.

Thus, the architectural concept is characterised by a great deal of respect towards the historical building, and only gentle interventions. The most noticeable changes have taken place outside, where modern glass and concrete structures complement the existing architecture at the entrance zone and in the inner courtyard. Modern and functional – that’s the style of the interior furnishings with Brunner furniture. High-quality fabric covers in different colours make for a nice contrast to the wood and natural stone floors as well as the dark wood roof structure.

In the lobby area, plot loungescapes create an inviting waiting zone for guests. The four seminar rooms and the multi-functional chapel seating up to 300 people have been equipped with stacking chairs from the first place and first line series. Thanks to their integrated row linking, they can be attached to each other safely. In the refectory, spring solid wood chairs were selected, featuring comfort upholstery in three colours, combined with clear 4-legged tables. Comfortable verona barstools complement the furnishings.
