crona felt: the very best

For crona felt, we adapted the crona range design to a new technology and took the aesthetic requirements of the original product into account in the process. In so doing, we crossed an interesting boundary. With this material, we managed to create the same soft seating comfort that upholstery provides but with a strength similar to plastic.

The result was crona felt – extra flexible and lightweight with an unusual look and feel. The special feature of crona felt: its seat shell is made from compressed non-woven material. The material is primarily known from car interiors, for example the classic rear shelf. After all, crona felt is proof that non-woven material can do so much more! crona felt is suitable for a broad variety of requirements – from the cafeteria, to the lounge, to the reception area.

crona felt is part of our extensive and versatile crona collection alongside the crona upholstered easy chair, the crona light plastic shell chair, the crona lounge range and the crona steel outdoor set. The designers explain the special feature of the range:

crona is something quite special because it is not an individual product, but a range. It has a strong identity, mostly thanks to the option it offers of combining two colours and materials. All models feature a shapely and feminine silhouette,

High durability, unusual look

Non-woven material – the chemical name being polyester fibre fleece – consists of an open-fibre structure. This means that the fibres are not woven or knotted together but instead form an intricate structure made up of individual fibres. In addition to the polyester fibres, special polyester melting fibres are added to the crona felt non-woven material which determine the strength and feel of the material.
Non-woven material offers numerous benefits when used in furniture. Its open-fibre structure means it is sound absorbing and it also has a warm surface, regardless of the temperature, and a pleasant felt feel. It is also highly resilient and has a life span of several decades.

The manufacturing process

The manufacturing process is similar to that of shaped wood, only this material is cold pressed. The polyester fleece mats are first heated in a special oven and then placed in a cold aluminium-pressing tool. After a few minutes, the fleece cools in the tool and thus retains its dimensional stability. The resulting piece is then cut to shape in a large water jet cutter using robot technology.
Since the non-woven material is less stable than shaped wood however, it has to be structurally supported by an appropriate frame. For crona felt, Brunner designed two appealing frame versions held by a particularly sturdy mounting base. The chair is available with both an elegant sled-base frame and a comfortable wooden frame in beech or bonded laminated oak wood. An optional removable seat cushion, which can be covered in all fabrics and colours from the Brunner portfolio, ensures even greater seating comfort and variety of colour.

Complete design freedom

crona felt can also be configured in various colours, making the chair suitable for a wide variety of design concepts. There are four colours to choose from: yellow, frost, light grey and dark grey. Different coloured fibres are blended to create the colours.
