City Hall of Biberach

Biberach an der Riß, Germany, 2016

Colourful Lightweight for Large Venues

In the Biberach Town Hall, the particularly lightweight stacking chair alite, coloured refreshingly red, perfectly completes the new look.

Everybody who spends some time in these rooms visibly enjoys the new colour design, that's obvious.

In the northern part of Upper Swabia, between Ulm and Lake Constance, there‘s the former free imperial city of Biberach an der Riß. Its central event venue is the Biberach Town Hall, built between 1974 and 1978 according to plans by Dutch architect Onno Greiner. This cultural and congress centre, located in the heart of the city gardens along the edge of the historic city centre, consists of several pre-fabricated concrete elements covered by copper pavilion roofs. Thanks to its being divided into small sections, the building comes across as unobtrusive despite its large volume, reflecting as it were the historic view of the town.

Between 2002 and 2005, the Town Hall underwent comprehensive reconstruction and renovation. For 2016, the pending project comprised new seating. Good use was to be made of the chair width the tiers in the large hall allow. For the required 1,750 chairs, the city of Biberach as the awarding authority moreover desired a combination of low weight, high functionality, appealing design and a high level of seating comfort. The Brunner stacking chair alite was able to fulfil all demands. Featuring a frame made of anodised aluminium, it was found particularly convincing thanks to its innovative lightweight construction. This makes it easy to handle and perfectly suitable for this large venue.

In order to make optimal use of the spacious tiers, the chair width was increased by 1.5 cm. In order to further enhance seating comfort, the back rests were also made higher, by 2 cm. Seat and back sport ergonomic shapes and comfortable upholstery. The red covers come across as friendly and inviting. A further plus: alite sets a new benchmark in terms of sustainability, for at the end of a long service life, it can be sorted and completely recycled as mono-fractions.
